The ruling party, Awami League, has issued a directive barring the children, family members, and close associates of ministers and Members of Parliament (MPs) from participating in the upcoming upazila parishad elections.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader conveyed these directives of the prime minister during a meeting with the party's divisional leaders held today (18 April) at the party's political office in the capital.

"During the meeting, our secretary general informed us about the Prime Minister's directive to ensure that the children, brothers, or relatives of ministers and MPs to not become candidates in the upazila elections," the party’s organising secretary SM Kamal Hossain told the Bangladesh First.

Those who defy this order and persist in their candidacy may face disciplinary action, possibly resulting in expulsion from the party, said party sources.

The upazila parishad elections are scheduled to be held in four phases across 485 out of 495 upazilas. The Election Commission will organize voting in the remaining areas afterward.

The first phase, slated for 8 May, will witness voting in 150 upazilas.

Meanwhile, a local media report reveals that in 14 upazilas of the first phase, the children, family members, and close relatives of ministers and Members of Parliament are running for the chairman's position.
