If the upcoming Upazila Parishad Elections become unsuccessful, the democratic continuity maintained through the last national election may be undermined, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal said on Thursday (April 25).

“The election must be fair by any means. If these elections fail, the democratic system established in the country may be undermined,” said the Chief Election Commissioner at a meeting with local administration about law and order during the upazila polls at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Kazi Habibul Awal said, “The prevalence of emotional affiliation creates some chaos during the election. But we have to ensure that voters can cast their ballots without any hindrance. We must demonstrate that democracy exists in Bangladesh.”

The meeting was attended by all deputy commissioners and superintendents of police, in addition to the presence of the Inspector General of Police and high-ranking officials from the public administration and home ministries.
