Secondary schools, colleges, madrasas, and technical education institutions across the country are set to resume classes from Sunday (28 April).

"Classes and regular activities will restart next Sunday as per the Ministry of Education's instructions. We are making the necessary preparations to welcome back students safely," said Professor Syed Jafar Ali, director (secondary) of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE).

"Assemblies at schools will remain suspended until further notice, and we're advising schools to limit activities that expose students to direct sunlight," the DSHE official added.

To compensate for the educational gap caused by recent closures, schools and colleges are also permitted to conduct classes on Saturdays until further notice, according to the DSHE directive.

However, as of 6:30pm, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has not issued any circular regarding the reopening of schools.

Earlier on 20 April, due to heatwave, the government had announced closure of all schools, colleges, madrasas, and technical education institutions nationwide from 21-27 April.

All secondary schools in Bangladesh began their holiday including Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr, and Pohela Boishakh on 26 March, following the closure of colleges on 25 March.

Primary schools and madrasas had already started their break on 22 March.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a warning today stating that the ongoing heatwave is expected to persist for another 72 hours, commencing this morning.
