2nd session of 12th JS prorogued

The second session of the 12th parliament was prorogued today after six sittings as the session started on May 2.

The Jatiya Sangsad's (JS) second session of the current 2024 year was convened aiming to endorse some important bills which were particularly important for the government.

Before reading out the prorogation order of the President, a radio speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was played in the House, which Bangabandhu delivered on April 30, 1972 marking May Day.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury expressed deep respect to the architect of Independence Bangladesh, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, a 10-year-old child Sheikh Russell along with family members who were assassinated on August 15, 1975.

She remembered 30 lakh martyrs and two lakh mothers and sisters who had lost their dignity during the liberation war in 1971.

At the same time, the Speaker remembered the four national leaders along with all martyrs including the dedicated heroes of the language movement of '52 and democratic movements.

She said parliamentary democracy moves a country towards development. "Our goal is to establish a poverty-free society "Sonar Bangla" dreamt by Father of the Nation. Bangladesh will be high middle income country by 2031 and developed-prosperous and smart Bangladesh by 2041," Dr Shirin Sharmin added.

She thanked all lawmakers for playing constructive role in making the parliament more effective to fulfill the aspirations of the people. 

She said Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Opposition Leader Golam Mohammad Quader and Deputy Leader Begum Matia Chowdhury, ministers, lawmakers from the treasury and opposition benches and independent members attended the businesses of the House.

The Speaker said Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina delivered her valedictory speech at the closing session. Leader of the Opposition Golam Mohammad Quader also spoke.

She said one bill was passed in the six sittings of the second session.

The House received 242 notices under the Rules of Procedures of the 71 rules, of which six notices were accepted in the House and four notices were discussed.

A total of 38 questions were received where 15 were available for the prime minister's question and answer session and 902 for other ministers were received and 364 were answered by the ministers of the different ministries during the session.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury also thanked all MPs, officials, journalists, law enforcers and fire service and civil defense personnel for their services rendered for smoothly holding the parliament session.
